It is very possible to have colour in a Dubai garden every month of the year. The secret is layering: a backbone of tough, heat-proof flowering shrubs that carry the summer, plus seasonal colour in the cooler months when almost anything will grow.
The backbone: plants that flower through the heat
- Bougainvillea — the workhorse. Colour for most of the year on very little water. See our full bougainvillea guide.
- Ixora — dense clusters of red, orange or pink; a reliable low hedge or mass planting.
- Hibiscus — big, tropical blooms; needs more water than most on this list but performs well.
- Lantana — extremely tough, flowers constantly, and pollinators love it. Available upright or trailing.
- Plumbago — soft sky-blue flowers, a rare and welcome colour in a hot garden.
- Frangipani (Plumeria) — sculptural, fragrant, and very much the scent of a Gulf summer evening.
- Desert rose (Adenium) — a striking specimen plant for pots and rockeries.
- Arabian jasmine — small white flowers with an exceptional evening fragrance.
Cool-season colour (roughly October to April)
Once the temperature drops, Dubai becomes a very easy place to garden. This is when you plant the soft, showy annuals:
- Petunia, vinca (periwinkle), marigold, salvia and celosia — excellent for beds, borders and pots.
- Chrysanthemum and geranium for containers.
- Gazania and Portulaca — sun-loving and superb for hot, exposed edges.
Plant these in autumn and they will carry the garden right through to spring. Expect to pull most of them out as the heat arrives — that is normal, not failure.
A word of caution: oleander
Oleander is common in the UAE and flowers beautifully on almost no water. It is also highly toxic in every part, including the smoke if burned. If you have young children or pets, we would not plant it, and there are plenty of equally tough alternatives.
How to make it look designed, not random
- Repeat, do not scatter. Three groups of five plants read far better than fifteen different plants dotted about.
- Limit the palette. Two or three colours plus green looks considered; every colour at once looks chaotic.
- Plant in the cool season so everything is established before summer.
- Group by thirst. Keep the thirsty plants together so you can irrigate them without drowning the drought-tolerant ones — a properly zoned irrigation system makes this easy.
