“Money plant” and “fortune plant” are among the most popular plants in Dubai homes and offices — given as gifts, placed by entrances and loved for their easy-going nature. But the names are genuinely confusing, because several completely different plants share them. Here is the honest, accurate breakdown — and the care that keeps each one thriving in Dubai’s bright, warm interiors.
1. Money plant / pothos (Epipremnum aureum)
In the UAE and across South Asia, “money plant” almost always means pothos — the trailing vine with glossy, heart-shaped leaves (also called golden pothos or devil’s ivy). It is arguably the easiest houseplant in the world: it grows in water or soil, tolerates low light, and forgives missed watering. Give it bright, indirect light for the best growth and let the soil dry slightly between waterings.
Good to know: pothos is toxic to cats and dogs (and an irritant if chewed by people) per the ASPCA — keep it up high or out of reach.
2. Money tree (Pachira aquatica)
The plant with the braided trunk and hand-shaped clusters of five leaves is the money tree, native to Central and South American wetlands. It likes bright, indirect light and a drink when the top few centimetres of soil dry out — it dislikes sitting soggy. Its big advantage: the ASPCA lists Pachira aquatica as non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it the fortune plant of choice for pet owners.
3. Jade plant (Crassula ovata)
Also called the money plant, lucky plant or friendship tree, the jade plant is a thick-leaved succulent — and it is superbly suited to Dubai because it loves light and needs little water. Give it a bright spot with some direct sun and water sparingly, letting it dry out fully between drinks. Overwatering is the only real way to harm it. Note it is toxic to pets. What they mean (in feng shui tradition)

The symbolism below is shared as tradition and belief, which many people in Dubai enjoy — not as a scientific claim.
