A balcony is the main outdoor space for most people in Dubai, and with the right plant choices it can be a lush, beautiful spot to enjoy the city’s wonderful evenings. The secret is simple: match the plant to how much sun your balcony actually gets. Pick right and it practically looks after itself. First, work out your balcony’s aspect
- South or west-facing — lots of strong, direct sun. You need heat-lovers.
- North-facing or shaded — bright but little direct sun. Foliage and shade plants shine here.
- East-facing — gentle morning sun, the easiest of all; almost anything is happy.
For a sunny, hot balcony (south/west)
- Bougainvillea — the champion of Dubai balconies: masses of colour, loves full sun, drought-hardy. See our bougainvillea guide.
- Succulents and cacti — made for hot, bright spots and almost impossible to kill by neglect. More in our succulents and cacti guide.
- Desert rose (Adenium) — sculptural, sun-loving and beautifully flowered.
- Portulaca, lantana and periwinkle (vinca) — tough flowering colour that laughs at heat.

For a shaded or north-facing balcony
- Pothos (money plant) — trailing, lush and thrives in bright shade; one of the easiest of all.
- Snake plant (Sansevieria) — near-indestructible, upright and architectural, happy in low light.
- Peace lily — glossy leaves and white flowers for a shaded corner.
- ZZ plant and dracaenas — handsome foliage that tolerates low light and irregular watering.
- Ferns — for a cooler, more humid shaded balcony.
For flowers and colour (bright but not scorching)

- Hibiscus and ixora — shrubby colour that enjoys the warmth.
Two things that make or break a balcony garden
- Containers and watering. Pots dry out fast in the warmth, so check them often; a simple drip line on a timer takes the worry away — see water-efficient irrigation.
- Move with the seasons. Many balcony plants love spring and autumn; give tender ones a shadier spot or extra water through high summer and they will sail through.
