If there is one plant that defines a Dubai garden, it is bougainvillea. It flowers through the worst of the heat, drinks very little, and covers a wall faster than almost anything else.
Why it works so well here
- Colour nearly all year. In Dubai it will flower through most of the year, peaking in the cooler months.
- Very low water. Once established it is genuinely drought-tolerant. In fact it flowers better when it is kept a bit dry.
- Loves full sun. The hotter and brighter the spot, the happier it is.
- Fast privacy. Trained along a boundary wall or over a pergola, it screens quickly.
- Versatile. Grow it as a climber, a hedge, a standard tree, or keep it clipped in a large pot.
A useful quirk: the colourful part is not the flower. Those papery magenta, orange, white or pink structures are modified leaves called bracts. The actual flowers are the tiny cream tubes in the middle.
The care rules (they are simple, but people get them wrong)
- Do not overwater. This is the number one mistake. Too much water gives you a big green plant with almost no colour. Let it dry out between waterings — a little stress triggers flowering.
- Full sun. In shade it will sulk and refuse to flower.
- Go easy on nitrogen. High-nitrogen lawn feed pushes leaves at the expense of bracts. Use a fertiliser higher in phosphorus and potassium.
- Prune after each flush. Bougainvillea flowers on new growth, so cutting back encourages the next wave of colour. It responds well to hard pruning.
- Mind the thorns. They are serious. Wear gloves, and think twice about planting it right beside a narrow path, a play area, or a pool edge where people walk barefoot.
Best places to use it
- Along a boundary wall for colour and privacy.
- Trained over a pergola or shade structure — it gives shade and colour together.
- Cascading over a raised bed or retaining wall.
- In large pots flanking an entrance, clipped into a neat standard.
