Compost is the best thing you can add to Dubai’s sandy soil, and making your own means a free, endless supply. The heat here is actually an advantage — compost breaks down fast when it is warm — but that same heat means the one thing you must manage carefully is moisture. Get that right and it is genuinely easy.
What you need
A shaded corner and a bin. Keep the pile out of direct sun — in full Dubai sun it dries to dust and stops working. A closed plastic compost bin or tumbler in shade holds moisture far better than an open heap.
The green-and-brown balance
Good compost is a mix of two things:
- Greens (nitrogen): fruit and vegetable scraps, coffee grounds, tea, fresh grass clippings, plant trimmings.
- Browns (carbon): dry leaves, shredded cardboard and paper, sawdust, small twigs.
Aim for roughly two to three parts brown to one part green. Too many greens and it turns into a wet, smelly sludge; too many browns and nothing happens. Never add meat, fish, dairy, oily food or pet waste — they smell, attract pests and go rancid in the heat.
The Dubai-specific bit: water and turn
Your compost should feel like a wrung-out sponge — moist, not soggy, never bone dry. In Dubai’s climate you will need to sprinkle water on it regularly, especially in summer, or it simply stalls. Turn the pile with a fork once a week to add air, which speeds everything up and prevents smells. In warm weather you can have usable compost in as little as 6–10 weeks.
Using it
Finished compost is dark, crumbly and smells earthy. Dig it into beds before planting, use it as a top-dressing around established plants, or mix it into potting soil for containers. It is the foundation of improving Dubai’s sandy soil and it will transform how your vegetables and flowering plants grow.
