A lush green lawn is still the centrepiece of many Dubai villa gardens, and yes, you can have one — but be honest with yourself first: a natural lawn in this climate is thirsty and high-maintenance. If that puts you off, read our comparison of natural grass versus artificial grass before you commit. If you want the real thing, here is how to keep it green.
Choose a grass that suits the heat
The lawns that survive Dubai are warm-season grasses — typically varieties of Bermuda grass and, for shadier spots, St Augustine (buffalo) grass. These revel in Dubai’s sunshine, thriving where cool-season grasses would struggle in the summer warmth. Starting with the right species is half the battle.
Water deeply, not often
This is the mistake that ruins most Dubai lawns. A quick daily sprinkle wets only the surface and grows shallow, weak roots that fry the moment you miss a day. Instead water deeply and less frequently so moisture soaks down and roots grow deep to find it. Always water in the early morning — evening watering leaves grass wet overnight and invites fungal disease, and midday watering just evaporates. A properly zoned automatic irrigation system makes this consistent; hand-watering a lawn here almost never works.
Mowing and feeding
- Do not cut too short. Scalping a lawn in Dubai exposes the soil, stresses the grass and invites weeds. Leave it a little longer so it shades its own roots.
- Keep the blades sharp. Blunt mower blades tear the grass, leaving ragged brown tips.
- Feed regularly. Sandy soil is poor, so a growing lawn needs feeding through the season with a balanced lawn fertiliser to stay thick and green.
Fixing brown patches
Brown patches usually come down to one of a few causes: dry spots where irrigation is not reaching (check your sprinkler coverage), salt build-up from the water (occasional deep flushing helps), fungal disease from overnight wet, or compacted soil that needs aerating. Diagnose the cause before you throw more water at it — often the problem is too much water, not too little.
The honest verdict
A natural lawn rewards you with a genuine soft, cool, living surface — but only if you commit to the watering, mowing and feeding, all of which peak during Dubai’s warm summer months. Many Dubai homeowners keep a small natural lawn where it matters and use hardscaping or artificial grass elsewhere. Whatever you choose, our garden maintenance team can keep it in top condition year-round.
