If you learn only one thing about gardening in Dubai, make it the calendar. Timing is everything here — the exact same seed thrives in October and dies in June. Here is the year, month by month.

How the Dubai year works

Dubai’s growing calendar runs backwards from Europe: you plant in October, everything peaks in January, and by June you are in survival mode. Get the timing right and gardening here is easy; get it wrong and nothing you do will save the plant. The best six months of gardening run from October to March. The summer, May to September, is about survival — protecting established plants and planning for autumn.

Month by month

September — Prepare. The heat is easing. Clean and refill beds, add compost and manure, and start heat-sensitive seeds (lettuce, tomatoes) indoors or in shade, ready to plant out.

October — The big one. The single most important month. Sow the main vegetables (beans, carrots, radishes, brassicas, tomatoes, cucumbers), plant herbs, and plant trees and shrubs — citrus, jasmine, bougainvillea, neem and palms all establish beautifully now.

November — Keep planting. Still prime time. Add the cool-lovers — spinach, lettuce, Swiss chard — and plant winter flowers (petunia, marigold, pansy, dianthus, alyssum) for colour.

December – February — Peak season. The garden is at its best. Keep succession-sowing greens and herbs every few weeks so you always have more coming. This is also the ideal window to plant trees, which will root well before summer.

March — Transition. Enjoy the last of the cool. Start switching to heat-tolerant varieties, and begin mulching to keep roots cool as temperatures climb.

April — Protect. Apply mulch, set up shade for vulnerable plants, and make sure irrigation is working properly before the real heat.

May – August — Survival mode. Do not plant anything soft now. Water deeply and early, keep everything shaded and mulched, and watch for heat stress. See our guide to caring for your garden in Dubai’s summer heat. In late August, start seeds again for the coming season.

Trees and palms are the exception

Hardy, established native trees like the ghaf need almost nothing year-round. And palms actually root best when the soil is warm, so their ideal planting windows are the shoulder months of spring and autumn — see planting palm trees in Dubai.

The short version

  • Plant: October to April
  • Best month to start: October
  • Just survive: May to September
  • Water: always early morning or evening, never midday
