A traditional grass lawn is, by a distance, the thirstiest thing in most Dubai gardens. It needs water almost daily through summer, regular mowing, feeding and constant repair — and it still tends to look tired by August. Ground cover plants are the sensible alternative.
The benefits
- Much lower water use. Most ground covers need a fraction of what grass demands, and that is the single biggest running cost in a Dubai garden.
- No mowing. An occasional trim once or twice a year, rather than a weekly cut.
- They cool the ground and shade the soil, which reduces evaporation and keeps the root zone of nearby plants cooler.
- They suppress weeds. A dense mat leaves nowhere for weeds to establish.
- They hold soil on slopes and around beds.
- Many of them flower, so you get colour as well as green.
Ground covers that work in Dubai
- Wedelia (Sphagneticola) — fast, dense, yellow daisy flowers, very tough. Vigorous, so give it an edge to grow to.
- Trailing lantana — superb in heat and sun, flowers almost continuously, and pollinators love it.
- Gazania — brilliantly coloured daisies, thrives in hot, exposed, sunny spots.
- Portulaca (moss rose) — a succulent carpet for the hottest, driest, sunniest corners.
- Ice plant (Aptenia) — low-water succulent mat.
- Asparagus fern — soft, feathery texture; tolerates part shade.
- Mondo grass / Ophiopogon — neat, grass-like tufts; good in shadier spots under trees.
- Rosemary (prostrate) — low, aromatic, drought-tolerant and edible.
Where each one belongs
- Hot, full sun, low water: Portulaca, gazania, ice plant, trailing lantana.
- Under trees / part shade: mondo grass, asparagus fern.
- Slopes and banks: wedelia and lantana — they knit together and hold the soil.
- Between paving and stepping stones: low, tough mats that will take the occasional footstep.
Do you still want some lawn?
Most families do want a patch of soft grass for children or pets — that is fair. The best approach is usually a compromise: keep a small, well-shaped lawn where you actually use it, and use ground covers, gravel and planting for everything else. That gives you the feel of a green garden at a fraction of the water.
