The part everyone gets wrong: what goes underneath
This is what separates a stone feature that still looks perfect in three years from one that fails in months. Gravel is only as good as the base beneath it:
- Weed-control membrane. A quality geotextile membrane under the stone is essential — it stops weeds pushing through while still letting water drain. Skip it and you will be pulling weeds out of your gravel forever.
- Proper edging. Without firm edging, gravel migrates onto paths, into beds and down drains. Steel, aluminium, stone or timber edging keeps everything crisp and contained.
- A compacted, level base and drainage. Laid on loose sand, stone sinks and ruts. A firm, graded base means it stays even and rain drains away instead of pooling. This groundwork is core hard landscaping.
- The right depth. Too thin and the membrane shows through and weeds win; too deep and it is hard to walk on. The correct depth depends on the stone size — something a good installer judges for you.
Gravel as mulch: a Dubai pro tip
A layer of gravel or pebbles around trees, shrubs and in planting beds works as a permanent mulch — it shades the soil, cuts evaporation so you water less, keeps roots cooler and stops the surface baking hard. It does the job of bark mulch without breaking down or blowing away, which is why it pairs so well with improved soil and drip irrigation.
