Dubai’s warm climate is wonderful for plants and, unfortunately, just as wonderful for the insects that eat them. The pests here are different from the ones in a European or American garden, and a couple of them are serious enough to kill a mature tree. Here is what to watch for and what actually works.
Red palm weevil — the one to take seriously
If you own palms, this is the pest that matters most. The red palm weevil bores into the crown of a palm and hollows it out from the inside, and by the time you see drooping or collapsing fronds the damage is often fatal. Date palms and Canary Island date palms are the usual targets. Early signs are chewed fibres around the crown, weeping holes in the trunk, and a slightly off, fermented smell. Treatment needs professional trunk injection and preventive spraying — this is not a DIY job. Whitefly and aphids
Tiny sap-suckers that cluster on the undersides of leaves. You will see leaves yellowing, a sticky “honeydew” residue, and often a cloud of white specks when you brush the plant. They multiply explosively in the heat. Blast them off with a hose, then treat with insecticidal soap or a neem-oil spray in the early morning or evening — never in midday sun, which will scorch wet leaves.
Mealybugs and scale
These look like white cottony blobs (mealybugs) or small brown bumps (scale) stuck to stems and leaf joints. They are stubborn. Dab small outbreaks with a cotton bud dipped in diluted alcohol, and treat larger ones with horticultural oil that smothers them. Ants often farm them for their honeydew, so controlling ants helps.
Spider mites
Classic hot, dry-weather pest — and Dubai is hot and dry. You will notice fine webbing and a dusty, stippled, faded look to the leaves. They hate humidity, so regular misting and hosing the undersides of leaves keeps them down; neem oil handles heavier infestations.
Whitegrubs, snails and the soil-level pests
Overwatered lawns and beds attract grubs that chew roots. The fix is usually cultural: water deeply but less often so the soil surface dries between waterings. Good irrigation practice prevents more pest problems than any spray.
The golden rules for Dubai
- A healthy plant resists pests. Correct watering, decent soil and the right species for the climate matter more than any chemical. Weak, stressed plants get eaten.
- Spray at dawn or dusk, never in direct sun.
- Check the undersides of leaves weekly — that is where infestations start.
- Act early. A problem caught at ten insects is easy; the same problem at ten thousand is not.
